What's an Agriturismo?

PhotoThe word Agriturismo comes from joining the two Italian words for 'Agriculture' and 'Tourism'. The concept came about when farmers were struggling to make a profit. Italy was in crisis from 1950 to around 1970 and many farmers in this period abandoned their country houses for city life and work. Not wanting the rural experience to be lost forever the government gave financial incentives to anyone wanting to restore the building that had been left.

So, in 1985 the idea of the Agriturismo was born. It was to be more than a stay on a farm but a senses experience for the whole family. Many Agriturismo (Agriturismi is the Italian plural) offer luxurious surroundings and first class hospitality.

Don't think you'll be up milking the cows at 4am (though the farmer may let you if it's possible!), what you will experience is a slower pace of life, great food and wines, incredible views and the chance to meet real Italians.

Extra Activities

Many offer extra activities such as guided tours on foot, by bicycle or motorcycle, horse riding, cooking courses, language courses and wine tasting. You may even be offered the chance to help out on the farm!

At least one meal a day is usually included in the price and the food is either grown on the farm or produced locally.

Renting a car is a good idea as your hosts will have plenty of suggestions of what to see and do locally.

Agriturismo are a great way to take a vacation, especially as they are usually cheaper than hotels and offer a much better experience.
